As the boxy flank of Ursa Major began sparkling at the center of the sky, a steady stream of families with young children began arriving and settling in at the mouth of the path, with beach chairs and small flashlights and battery powered lanterns in tow.
“It’s time to turn off your light and be quiet now,” I hear one mother say to her child. “The stars are about to come out.” tense shift here. It caught me. Please read and make sure this is where you want the shift to occur.
Environmental pilgrimages are on the rise--particularly for those of us who long to be a witness to the universe at night. The recently published piece "To Seek the Field of Stars," tells the story of one such pilgrimage--to Wisconsin's Newport State Park--the only Wisconsin state park recognized as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association.
